Help me give my students an outlet for all of their physical energy by providing bouncy bands to keep their feet moving so their hands and minds can stay focused on learning.
The students I teach are energetic sixth graders who have a passion for hands-on learning. The more active I can make a lesson, the more they seem to engage. I strive to include movement and peer interaction with every lesson I present.
I drive about 25 miles north of my house to teach at a very special school tucked away in the Arizona dessert.
My students come from homes scattered about the beautiful surrounding hills and need to be bused in. They represent all walks of life, and know the importance of hard work.
These students have an exceptional interest in social studies. They love learning and discussing history as well as politics. When I can tie a reading or writing assignments to these topics, they produce amazing work. I have learned much from listening to their perspective.
My Project
I wish that someone would have thought of these when I was in school! Bouncy bands are big elastic bands that hook on the base of the student's desk. The student can sit with their feet up on the band and bounce away. They make no noise and cause no distraction to other students.
My active students will have a release for their pent up energy while allowing for more focus on their classwork.
Other students with test anxiety will be able to ease themselves during testing by exerting energy on the bands. Students who have anger issues will have a safe, physical venue to depress frustration. Genius!
