Happy and Focused in the Speech Room!

Help me give my students the environment they need! I aiming to enhance the environment in my speech therapy room by providing less distracting storage options and age-appropriate fidget/sensory tools to promote focus and participation in therapy sessions.

My Project

As a speech therapist, I am committed to providing a supportive and accommodating environment for all my students. Currently, my speech room lacks proper storage solutions for materials, leading to distractions and decreased engagement during therapy sessions. This especially impacts the students who are on my caseload who are neurodivergent. For neurodivergent students, a well-designed environment can significantly improve their ability to engage with learning.

The current open shelving storage in the speech room is a frequent distraction that results in time spent redirecting students and fielding questions/comments about off-topic materials.

Because students miss time in the general education classroom when they are pulled for speech therapy, it's important to be as efficient as possible with our time in speech sessions. Time redirecting students is much better spent on lessons and practicing skills. Proper storage will eliminate visual distractions caused by open shelving, creating a calmer and more conducive environment for learning.

I also hope to use this grant to purchase fidget and sensory tools for my neurodivergent students. Without appropriate tools, some students struggle to maintain focus during learning tasks. I have selected a variety of fidgets to provide age-appropriate options for the different grade levels I serve. By providing the students with fidget and sensory tools, I can offer students an evidence-based way to channel excess energy and facilitate their ability to focus during learning tasks.

I do believe that these items will change the environment in the speech room for the better. By replacing open shelving with closed cabinets/bins and providing fidget and sensory tools, I hope to create a more calming and focused environment and offer applicable materials for my students that maximizes opportunities for learning.
