Our classroom serves a small number of students with multiple or severe disabilities in a traditional high school setting. The students range in age from 13-18 and travel from two states to receive highly specialized educational and therapeutic instruction. The students all have an intellectual and communication disability in addition to a variety of physical and medical disorders. Students may be diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy, mitochondrial disease or rare chromosomal disorders.

These students work hard every day to learn not only functional academic skills, but also life skills such as dressing and feeding themselves. This is not easy when they have to struggle with the way their particular disability affects their ability to use their hands or they face visual impairment in addition to other disabilities. These students need to practice using their hands to complete fine motor tasks everyday in order to build up their strength and dexterity. However doing the same fine motor tasks with the same tired materials day after day can be boring and discouraging.

Our students need a variety of fine motor tools including a lock box, beading columns, PVC pipe activity kit and hand kits. Such items allow students to develop hand skills, also known as fine motor skills. These items need to be functional such as the lock box or fasteners or need to be fun and dynamic such as the hand activity kits. Most of the materials need to be varied to allow the students to work on fine motor skills at different levels as they progress and to try new things to prevent boredom.

Your donation will give us a wide variety of fun, functional and dynamic activities to learn hand skills. These hand skills will carry over into self feeding and dressing skills, and give the students a better chance at a more independent life.
