Dr. Seuss once wisely stated, "A person's a person, no matter how small." My teeny, tiny little learners are important people who have amazing capabilities to continue positively impacting our world.
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have moderate to significant disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
The materials we are requesting will make a lasting difference to my classroom and the learning of my students. If I'm being completely honest, my students have absolutely horrendous handwriting. They struggle with fine motor control and have had little exposure to the concept of lines making sense on paper. Though they have made big strides since starting school, we are looking for a curriculum that will help us take a fun, yet structured, approach to really teaching handwriting!
Handwriting Without Tears is a research-based curriculum that helps teach young learners the basics of handwriting. They attack the often dreaded handwriting lessons through multi-sensory tools and strategies that are developmentally appropriate. The curriculum combines fun characters, engaging workbooks, music, and manipulatives into each lesson. The entire program is built around research that states how children respond best when they are actively engaged and moving as they learn.
My students have a major barrier to sharing their knowledge: their handwriting.
This curriculum could really stand in the gap for us. Please thoughtfully consider supporting our belief that all of my students can make big gains with their writing this year. Thank you.
