Hands-on Today is Learning in Every Way

My Students

Every opportunity is a chance to learn for the beginning years of school. The students in my classroom are building a sense of routine and gaining confidence while being supported by a new community.

My students are being supported in their learning through evidence based practices that support those who have needs related to Autism Spectrum disorders and learn in a unique way.

While we focus on these practices, the students engage in learning through a They participate in play activities, academic lessons individually and in groups, and work on discovering how to interact with their peers and others in the community.

They are learning how to play and work with the materials we have and need many opportunities and direct teaching to build their skills. We are working on growing their skills so that they are able to join their peers in larger classes and participate in the general education curriculum. Our school is located in an urban setting and serves many children who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The district has limited funding and we need to work together to support our students to get the materials.

My Project

Using a variety of seating options, cushions or chairs my students learn to regulate their bodies and be active participants in lessons. Within these lessons, using long lasting materials that are meaningfully created by felt and laminating allows students to be active participants. While holding onto materials, students maintain their focus on the lesson. The beanbags allow for sharing, group awareness, and advanced thinking lessons and supporting concepts we are learning in basic academics (colors, shapes, number, and letters). Our sensory table is a learning opportunity that teaches students how to self-direct their learning, play along side others, and work together in small groups. The sand, string balls, and textured balls will be used as materials to enhance lessons related to the themes.

My students are learning how to learn.

And as their educators we are learning how to better inform our instruction. The stop watches are used to collect data in a convenient way and allow us to better teach the students.
