My Students

Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students from a lifelong love of the subject matter, and, hopefully, pursue a career in the science field. I teach seventh-grade science at a magnet middle school in a downtown urban area. I have 103 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

My students are diverse.

Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving and from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered a school of need according to the number of students who qualify financially for free lunch programs.

Some students come to school hungry and are not truly concerned with what we have to teach them because they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of where their next meal may come from. Other students question if we actually have something to teach them that will truly make a difference in their lives. Still others wonder if learning can truly be fun.

My Project

I am requesting a subscription to BrainPOP that allows students to have access the website at home and also at school. BrainPOP covers a wide variety of topics in math, science, English, and history using the characters Tim and a robot named Moby. To engage the students, the videos start with a question from a students about the topic; many times the same question our students would ask. Using visuals, the characters explain the topics to help all students understand. Each video includes an interactive quiz to check for understanding and extension activities for each topic. BrainPOP provides another means of explaining topics to our student population. BrainPop also allows students to code and program based on the different topics, make their own movies that includes digital storytelling, and submit assignments to their teacher easily.

Coding is the new literacy - to thrive in tomorrow’s society, students must learn how to design, create, and express themselves with new technologies like robotics.

I am also requesting a new Ozobot robot with chargers that will allow my students the opportunity to learn programming and coding. By putting these Robots into the hands of my scholars, we will impact the way they think in terms of coding. It will provide them with more hands-on activities to showcase their coding skills and to build their skills. Kids love being hands-on when they are learning, i would also like to request more engineering kits and storage containers to keep them safe.
