I work for a Title I school in which a high percentage of children receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. The majority of our students come from low-income homes. Despite the many different struggles these children come to school having to deal with, they come eager and ready to learn, with a smile on their faces. Creating a fun and positive environment for my students is my number one objective; along with having a place for my students to feel safe, respected and loved!
My Project
My second graders are at the perfect time in their lives to learn about letters and their sounds, common (and not so common!!) spelling patterns, root words, prefixes, suffixes, compound words, and other crucial rules regarding the English language.
In order to have my students master their weekly phonics word lists, I engage them in many hands-on activities.
I would like my students to be able to stamp up their spelling words as an additional practice each week in small groups. That way, they will have so much fun while being engaged while they complete their necessary understandings of grade-level phonics. Stamps are also easily able to be modified for my students who are gifted/talented just as much as they are beneficial for my struggling learners and those that are English-language deficient.
More than half of students from low‑income households
