My Students

My classroom is filled with 15 wonderful students who have a cognitive impairment in 1st-8th grade. They are with me from the time they are evaluated to the time they graduate 8th grade.

These students mean the world to me and I want to provide them with the best education possible!

My students are in a self-contained special education classroom, and this is where all their learning happens. They love learning, and I want to help them learn in the best way that I can.

Many of the students in my class are from low-income families, and the things I get for my classroom help them in the long run. I want to provide every opportunity for my students to succeed so that they can believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

My Project

I did so much shopping this year for my classroom. One thing I noticed though is that I never pick up any social studies supplies as I tend to go for the ELA and math supplies. Social studies is just as important as other subjects, although it is not given the attention it deserves.

I want to give my students a hands-on social studies learning experience.

Social studies is always the hardest subject to make hands-on and that is how many of my special education students learn. I want to teach social-emotional behavior to my students as many of them lack it. Then throughout the year I want to teach them about Native Americans and the importance they have on our country. The Native American resource box will help show my students hands on materials that the Native Americans used which may be confusing to them. I also want to do continents later this year, as students usually do not know anywhere outside of the USA. This will help open their moms to how big the world is and they can explore different cultures. The resource box for this will help with a hands on approach as this is a big lesson and the mats will help the students follow along with what continent we are working on.

These materials would help me in accomplishing these goals!
