This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the thrill of making new discoveries about science? My kindergartners love doing hands-on science.
My students are kindergartners in a Spanish dual-immersion program.
75% of our students are native Spanish-speakers from low-income families who live in crowded apartments near our school. 25% of our students are English-speakers from more affluent neighborhoods. We are fortunate to have hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum that the children find both fun and engaging. At this age, they view themselves as budding scientists and are eager to do science experiments. However, doing the activities is only the first step. My students also need to be able to document, describe and present what they are learning.
My Project
We need ink for our printer and photo paper so my students will be able to document their hands-on science experiments about animals, wood/paper and trees. They do not yet have the drawing skills to easily illustrate their observations with pencil and paper. However, by taking and printing digital photos they can capture their science observations. Photos from science projects will be used as prompts and illustrations for students to use in their daily journal writing.
Using a camera and printing photos on our ink jet printer to document science experiments is critical to help keep my students engaged in hands-on science.
While their drawing skills continue improving they can use the camera to accurately capture their observations. As a result, my students will continue viewing themselves as young scientists looking forward to the next opportunity to do a new experiment.
