Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love doing hands-on activities and investigations. Every day they would ask me when we will do the next experiment or they would simply tell me how they loved the last one we did. Students are by nature curious, and they do get turned off by pure textbook treatment of a science class.
My Biology students are mostly 9th graders who are excited to finally get to high school!
They are mostly eager to learn science hoping that there will be a lot of hands-on investigations and experimentation. Most of the concepts in biology might be difficult for students to grasp without being given the opportunity to perform hands-on activities and using manipulatives. Once given ample opportunities for explorations, my students get excited to learn science and they find fulfillment on what they do, thus increasing their learning. With the new science standards being implemented, it becomes more imperative for students to have more laboratory investigations for them to know how scientists practice science.
My Project
My students need science kits such as the frog dissection biokit, owl pellets, zebra fish breeding kit, as well as lab supplies. More important than learning science is the appreciation of how science impacts our lives. Appreciation of science comes as a result of being given the opportunity to carry out meaningful and enjoyable hands-on laboratory investigations. This is what I hope to achieve for my students in this project. Just writing this project proposal already gives me the excitement of seeing my students totally engaged in scientific investigations. Please help me make this project come a reality.
With this project, I hope that my students will become more interested in science.
It is this interest in their high school science that will motivate them to take science and engineering courses in college. These courses are what our students need to take in order for our society to continue developing. Motivating my students to take science courses will hopefully improve their lives since science careers are always in demand.
