Hands-on Science!

My students need hands-on science activities materials for heat, light, sound, and rocketry. We also need more comfortable chairs.

My Students

Why do we have our students read about science topics from a book when they can participate in hands-on science activities?! Research shows students understand concepts better when they participate in hands-on activities in addition to reading or lectures on the subject.

These students attend a public school that houses three different programs.

As a whole, the school is 61% low income -which just misses the target for a title one school and all the extra funding that comes with it. These students come from a range of backgrounds. Some walk to school, some are bussed in, but most of them are enthusiastic about learning, especially if they can DO something in school.

My Project

With this science equipment, we will be able to help students understand the concepts of heat, light, sound, and space better. They will be able to experience the Doppler effect, what happens to sound in a vacuum, how sympathetic waves are created in a resonance box, how light refracts through lenses, or different mediums, how light mixes colors, how to create optical illusions with light and mirrors, the thrill of putting together and launching their own model rocket 200ft into the sky. In addition, they will do it all comfortably with these new chairs. Their chairs are the most important piece of furniture in the classroom. It is the one item they are in contact with more than anything else their entire educational career, and my current classroom chairs are easily 45 years old.

Nationally science scores are lower than both math and reading scores.

Part of the problem is the difficulty of putting experiments into the hands of students, allowing them to experience science rather than just hear about it, or watch a movie about it. Experiments like these give students the opportunity to see/hear/feel/experience what happens in science; that knowledge becomes part of them- way better than any lecture! My goal is to make learning as hands-on as possible.
