My Students

Our middle school brings in students from eight elementary schools, giving us a diverse student body. We have more English Language Learners than any other school in the district. Our boundaries cross multiple train tracks and a freeway, so most of our students arrive by bus.

COVID-19 was difficult for everyone, my students included.

Some students had to babysit younger siblings and couldn't do their school work. Some needed to go to work with their parents. To varying degrees, they all missed instruction while we went virtual during the last 30% of the 2019-2020 school year. During 2020-2021, the students struggled to get back into the groove of school. Now we're finally picking up steam.

My Project

Half the year we learn about biology. The human torso will help my students as we learn about body systems. It will help them conceptualize organs and see how they work together. The cell model, DNA model, and DNA extraction kit will help make visible what is usually too small to see. The Wisconsin Fast Plants will help my students see evolution as we grow multiple generations of the same plant in 72-hours.

The second half of the year we learn about geology and physics.

When we transition to earth science, we will use the density cubes to learn about the different densities of the different layers of the earth.
