Teaching science to kindergarten can become a very difficult task. I would like to take some of the science lessons that I teach and make them more hands-on. I teach a unit on the life cycle of butterflies and frogs. I feel that the students would get a better understanding of these life cycles if they were able watch the various cycles that take place and record it daily in their journal. I work at a title I school that has a very high poverty index. Many of the students are not exposed to science outside of school. Many of the students in my classroom are visual learns. Therefore, I feel that they would benefit more by being able to see the life cycles of the butterfly and frog. The materials necessary to make the hands-on experience possible would be a butterfly garden set and frog hatchery set. All eighteen of my students would watch and record daily/weekly activity. I would set aside a time each day to discuss the process that is taking place and what changes have occurred. I feel that my students would learn more from seeing the experience. Many of the students will not have the chance to experience the life cycle of a frog and butterfly outside of the classroom.
