Hands On Science!

My students need a webcam and lab supplies, such as gloves, DNA kits and blood simulation to conduct forensic science investigations.

My Students

Current schools fail to compete with the excitement and stimulation our students find in cell phones, computers and television. By providing my students with opportunities to conduct real investigations in the classroom they will understand science is not memorizing facts but making discoveries.

My students are in the ninth through twelfth grades.

They live in urban neighborhoods with high levels of poverty. Our school is a small school with about 450 total students. The focus of our school is health sciences and research. Students take several health science, medicine and general science courses over the course of four years. Due to the small school model, most students only take core subject classes instead of a selection of electives. My students are social, inquisitive and eager to learn. They benefit from exposure to real life experiences like field trips, mentoring and lab investigations. My students will love to be dressed like scientists and conduct forensic investigations.

My Project

My classroom has been awarded an opportunity to pair with two other schools in different geographic regions. Using the webcam the students will be able to connect with and see the students at the other schools in real time. Students will be able to hold discussions, see how classrooms are different in other parts of the world and ask questions. The gloves will allow the students to conduct science investigations using the proper safety attire. The DNA kit and blood simulation will allow students to collect blood from a crime scene and match the blood to a suspect in a crime. Students will also conduct DNA fingerprinting to match the identity of a suspect in a crime to the DNA found at a crime scene. Students will learn how forensic investigators analyze evidence at a crime scene.

My students need to be engaged in a neighborhood with a high dropout and failure rate.

Laboratory supplies will ensure students conduct investigations in class not just look at pictures in books of people doing science. My students are excited when they wear lab attire and act like scientists. Providing them with this opportunity will show them that science is fun and possibly a career field they would like to pursue. Hands on science is the way to go!
