I work with a small group of children who need creative, specialized instruction. They are the 5th-8th graders that I provide specialized instruction to every day. My students are working to self regulate their emotions and behaviors so they can experience success in school. They have a hard time functioning in large classrooms with many students, but one thing is certain, they all have the desire to be successful.
It is important for my students to have tools to practice mindfulness, stress relief, and emotional management with community building activities, materials and an environment that promotes learning essential skills.
My students' goals are to get back into the general education classroom. Right now they are spending time in both settings. When they are with me we work on academics but also strategies to manage emotions and cope with difficult situations.
I want their classroom to be special because students with special needs almost always have problems with low self esteem. They don't like being singled out as being the student who needs extra help. Walking into an inviting environment where they feel like they are learning and experiencing positive growth makes a huge difference in their success in school.
My Project
I've gone with hands on and individualized materials for Science, Social Studies and social growth. We're hitting all the senses. New microscopes with premade and blank slides for our own discoveries is just the start. Each student will also get their own book on weekly social studies topics in areas like history, civics and the economy. I'm also asking for materials for social emotional learning which will teach my students how to regulate their emotions in a positive way. I have meditation and relaxing lighting, music and seating.
There are even a few classroom supplies which may seem trivial at first glance, but the color of a worksheet can make a big difference for kids with dyslexia or organizational difficulties.
Colored copy paper and organizational materials are also included in my project. There is one thing I know the kids would be pleasantly surprised to see and that is a personal storage cubby for their things!! I surely made every dollar count!
