Help me give my students the opportunity to take risks in the classroom through hands-on learning.

My Students
The halls of PWL Middle School are filled with energetic preteens and teens that are eager to learn in a more hands-on way. Students come to PWL with many strengths, but we also recognize that there are more academic gaps than ever before as a result of COVID. Bridging academic gaps can be supported with the use of hands-on learning in science. Projects are also a way to provide equity among students when all materials can be provided by the class.
A student stated, “My favorite parts of science class are the labs and projects that we get to do each week.”
Students can use their strengths in design, building, engineering, and creativity to support their learning of science. Providing a variety of methods for learning and showing their knowledge leads to success which leads to further learning.
My Project
Throughout the year, many hands-on labs are completed by students. To be able to continue to offer these labs and projects that bridge academic gaps, materials are needed. The standard that students work towards mastering is MS-ETS1-4 which states, “Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.” To achieve this, students work through the engineering design process as they work towards planning and building an optimal design to solve a problem.
Many of my students returned to school after COVID as apathetic young adults who were unwilling to take risks in the classroom.
They are able to start taking risks through hands-on learning in the science classroom. This risk that they enter into supports the learning of these students and encourages them to think critically and creatively.
