My students need 3 sets of hands on science labs, interactive books on food chains and games to increase science vocabulary to get excited about science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This past year only 55% of my students passed the science test. It was my first time teaching 5th grade science, and I realized that I needed to have materials to cover what they were supposed to have learned in 3rd grade and 4th grade, as well as 5th grade.
My students come from all over.
About a third of my class is from central America, many are recent immigrants from Asia as well. Also, some of my students are refugees who, although they may be 10 years old, have never been to school before.
They love to learn science. They enjoy hands on labs, and understanding how the world works.
My Project
After analyzing my students scores, I found three key areas where they needed improvement: magnetic interactions, food chains and electricity.
The energy and magnetic labs includes a 50 minute video that explains how to conduct a variety of different experiments. It introduces key vocabulary terms. The kit then demonstrates how to do the experiments. It includes all of the materials I need and is reusable.
The food chain books are interactive. They are a choose your own adventure type books, where the students make choices about what an animal or human beings are going to do. They then find out the consequences of those actions. The set includes six different food chains.
All of the kits are hands on and fun. I have also included a few vocabulary building games. So many of my students are ESL. They need additional vocabulary help to understand science.
Last year my big focus was on math.
My class moved from less than a 50% pass rate on the state test, to over a 75% pass rate. And 1/3 of the students who passed exceeded!
This year, I plan to focus on science. Now that I really know what the students need to learn, I just need the materials to be able to teach in a hands on way that works for my ESL learners!
