This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine having your teacher ask you questions about things you have never seen or experienced before?

My students in Kindergarten come from a low socioeconomic background and do not get to see or experience many of the things the rest of us take for granted.

My students want to learn but are lacking some of the background knowledge to be able to talk about certain subjects. More than 90% of our school is on a free or reduced lunch. My students are very transient and are not able to stay in the same houses for long times. These families are living paycheck to paycheck and are not able to go to places that help their students learn about things. We live in Florida and many of my students have never seen the beach...We live 30 minutes away! My students are the type that need to have it proved to them. If they don't see it for themselves, then it might not be true. These kids have so many false images of the world and the way things work doing some hands on exploration might help them find real truths in the world.

My Project

If my students were able to do some hands-on work with things like the solar system and plants and animals, they would have a better understanding of the world around them. We would be able to let the kids do more of the learning by exploration and using the five senses. I am asking for some centers and resources that will help my students teach themselves and learn about the world around them. I am asking for a hands-on materials kit that would include items like hand lenses, tape measures, forceps, etc. the students would be able to use to explore. I am also asking for 3 kits that would allow for easy hands-on centers in all areas of science including: 5 senses, physical science (push and pull, motion), earth science (space, solar system and planets) and life science (plants and animals, weather). These materials are visual and lend to learning. These materials will help my students to learn from each other as well which is a skill that my students desperately need - communication

Having these materials in my class would make a world of difference to my students who without them would still know about science, but only because their teacher told them it was true.

My students need to be able to see for themselves and make their own experiences.
