Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love science. It is so exciting to watch them as they uncover new discoveries in their small world. They love to use the limited hands on manipulatives in our classroom.
I have a wonderful class of inquisitive second graders.
We are a part of a Title I school with a population of 97% free and reduced lunch participants. The fact that these children are in a high poverty area with little home-school interaction means that we need to make every minute of their instructional day count. My students love learning and trying new things. The more hands on experiences they have, the more they will be able to retain and apply their knowledge.
My Project
My students need hands on science centers and reading activities to use in small learning teams as well as independent choice activities. Because so much of 1st grade is spent on building strong foundations for reading, it is in second grade that we can set strong foundations for other subjects such as science. Using these hands on activities in learning teams will help them to develop critical thinking skills that will be a vital part of their success. Research has shown that students are more likely to master a topic when they are required to explain it to another person. Using these manipulatives and open communication will lead to mastery of the science concept.
Science concepts become so much more abstract as students advance through the grades.
If we can instill in our young students a love and enjoyment of science, it is my hope that this love will remain with them, even though concepts increase in difficulty. If teachers can cause these young scholars to feel successful now, this feeling will grow as they mature.
