We are a classroom full of active and enthusiastic k-2 students with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities. We spend most of our day in a self-contained special education classroom, but do get out to the regular education classrooms for parts of our day.
My students bring many unique needs and challenges to each activity which makes it hard to use standard curriculum. All of the curriculum needs to be adapted and/or it is not able to be used because it needs so many adaptations. There is not a lot of curriculum out there for the students that I teach. My students benefit from having hands-on activities to help them learn the subject matter and to show what they know.
We found these great theme boxes for science and social studies from Lakeshore Learning. These boxes will provide hands-on learning to go along with the different science and social studies topics that need to be covered each year.
Your help with make it possible to expose and teach students with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities the same topics in science and social studies that their regular education peers are learning in their classrooms. These activities will allow my students to be able to talk to their peers about the same things they are learning.
