My Students

My school is a public high school in a sort of urban area of California with about 1800 students in grades 9-12. Around 18% of the student population receives free or reduced-price price lunches. It is a diverse school with 46% Asian, 31% White, 12% Hispanic, 7% Black, and 4% two or more races. Our high school was established in 1874. It is a public comprehensive high school serving grades 9-12.

One thing that makes my school unique is how we implement special educational services.

We work hard to make sure our students' educational and emotional needs are met most inclusively.

My Project

I have begun testing a theory that might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes you have to use the side door to get in the house. The house in this case is reading comprehension.

I teach a reading and literacy class to high school students who are four or more years below grade level or are so stressed out by a classroom of 30-35 students that they shut down or stop coming to school.

They all have identified learning disabilities and have been in "special" reading classes for years. To them, my class is likely just another in a line of many, none of which have been able to bring them up to grade level. Instead of doing the same thing again for these 15- and 16-year-olds, I want to try something new for me. I'd like to make this reading class a project-based/art emphasized class.

My thought is that hands-on experiences will support student reading comprehension by activating prior knowledge and lowering reading dread.

Somehow I doubt student growth will show up on standardized tests (the cut points are too large to show small growth), but there may be evidence of growth in writing samples, increased attendance and meeting IEP goals!

After studying racial justice through reading, writing and personal experiences, this grant will help each student create a portrait of a BIPOC person who is important to them using real canvasses and acrylic paint. Later we will work together to create a mural.
