Hands-On Reading Helper

My project needs 30 over-the-chair pocket organizers for my second grade classroom.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L.'s classroom raised $586

This project is fully funded

My second grade inner city classroom is located in a high poverty section of the city. The students do not often come to school with much experience in keeping important items neat and organized. Their desks often have items jammed to the back, causing damage to the items and taking away from the valuable time they need to do tasks in the classroom. The students don't want to use damaged items or ones with parts missing. They like things new looking and in a location where they can be in control of getting them out without leaving their seats whenever they need them, but they don't have the tools presently to do this. Our school is currently under a watch for low scores by the state, especially in reading. I have recently attended a workshop on the Wilson Method of teaching reading to struggling readers, and the school corporation is spending thousands of dollars on new manipulatives to help every child to be successful in learning to read. The manipulatives include small magnetic letters and magnetic boards, individual white boards and markers, and word cards. The children will be using them every day and need a convenient place for storage. They need to take ownership of the items so that they will want to keep them nice. An over the chair organizer for each student will afford them the storage place for these manipulatives, as well as a place for their daily planner, morning work, and homework folder to keep them on track every day. They would be very proud to have their materials at hand and never have to share them. These organizational skills would help them for many years to come, I feel. The new materials, new program ,and new personal seat organizer would empower the students to use the materials, thus making the most of the program's tools to teach them to read. It would also allow me as the teacher to make the most of my classroom space and time. The seat organizers would be used by many students in many years to come if you can help.
