This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our older students want to read and have lots of ideas to share, but some need more phonics instruction to get there, especially our students in grades 3-5 who are English language learners or need more time to "break the code". Research shows that multisensory phonics instruction is most effective for struggling readers and spellers, but these materials are not included in grade 3-5 curriculum materials, since it's assumed students have mastered learning to read by 3rd grade, and can now just focus on reading to learn. These manipulatives will help our intermediate teachers to provide high-quality small group phonics instruction to their struggling readers and writers, so that they can make that transition along with their peers.
