Help me give my students yarn to provide the students with a hands-on experience during their novel study. Help my students learn to crochet to connect with the text and their families.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inquisitive and outgoing learners. Throughout the year, they have challenged themselves to grow as readers and digital citizens. They have worked to develop a collaborative and safe atmosphere in the classroom where we can discuss texts, scholastic ideas, and real-world problems. Within time, the students became an inseparable community of support where real-life struggles were being shared. This group has shown immense maturity in providing emotional support through their growth in middle school. Not only that, but these students also vocalize when they are struggling with something, educationally or internally. That element of education makes this group remarkable; they work to vocalize and give affirmation of their peers' self-worth and ability.
My Project
In the novel, Esperanza Rising, the grandmother makes sure to do one thing before she leaves the house: her crochet supplies. Originally, this concept stumps many students because it seems like a simple object. My team teacher and I would like to bring this activity into the magnet to introduce the students to a hands-on activity to connect the literature to not only their lives but their families as well. When introduced, many students struggled but were determined to get this skill. After engaging with it, the students began to understand how such a simple activity can hold so much weight in someone's life. This simple activity has brought the students closer to the text, in addition to their families. Many students have reached out to grandparents in hopes of learning more.
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by providing the students with a hands-on activity that connects to their culture, families, and the novel that we are engaging with.
Not only is this hands-on, but this activity is known to reduce stress and increase focus for students. These materials will be utilized by my team teacher and myself to integrate and support the novel study with our students.
