This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach third grade in a Title 1 school. My students are at or below poverty level living in a suburb of Los Angeles, California. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. My class consists of 9 amazing girls and 16 "ready to go" boys. They enjoy being challenged academically everyday. My emphasis this year is on really engaging my students reading and writing. My students are creative, inquisitive, hard working, and eager to learn about the world around them, as well as themselves. In the classroom they have time to work independently as well as in teams. They encourage each other to grow and explore their wonderful world of learning. My school is in a large district in Los Angeles, with passionate and motivated teachers who give their students opportunities that will make them successful in and out of the classroom.
This year my focus is for my students to become competent writers; mentor Texts, written by great writers, will help provide support, excitement, and guidance for my students to bloom into the amazing world of literature where their ideas will flow in sequence that will be translated into amazing pieces of written work.
My Project
One of the most effective ways to teach writing is to use Mentor Texts. My students will benefit by looking and reading examples of good writing, especially when that writing is published work done by professional writers. My students will use their prior knowledge to understand and use the writing process. Mentor Texts will allow us to have discussion during small group and whole group instruction, specially because we will read aloud to make sure that everyone reads the mentor text and my slow readers will have a sense of accomplishment because they wont be left behind. I will emphasize their attention on a well written sentence or paragraph and dig deep from diction to structure to alliteration. I will use Mentor Texts to teach my student about narrative, informative, persuasive, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry styles of writing. I know at the beginning my students will be shy, and they will want to imitate, but that is a natural process. Slowly they will gain confidence and create their own amazing writing pieces.
Mentor Texts will inspire my students to create effective pieces of their own.
