Hands-On Math

My students need linking cubes, place value blocks, and pattern blocks to help them visualize mathematical problems.

My Students

Students often hear the phrase, "Show me!" when they think they have found the solution to a mathematical problem. They are constantly expected to show their thinking in many ways, including by using manipulatives. They need proper materials to have opportunities to show what they are thinking.

My 5th grade students face many challenges, from keeping track of their materials for class to overcoming difficult home situations.

I teach math, science, and social studies to 5th graders at an inner-city middle school. Our school is a vibrant community where incredible learning takes place, despite many challenges. Students deserve the materials they need to learn. With a heightened focus on showing their thinking in many ways, students yearn to use manipulatives to model their thinking. Having to explain that we don't have certain materials is disappointing for the students and me.

My Project

With these new place value blocks, pattern blocks, and snap cubes, students will have the variety of tools they need to work with math. The tools will be displayed at the back of the classroom for students to access whenever they feel the manipulatives will be helpful. Many students learn best when they can touch and feel the math and numbers with which they are working. These tools will allow them to do just that.

Students need manipulatives to learn math.

Without these tools, their learning is stifled. By having these items at their disposal, students' mathematical knowledge will flourish. I can't wait to see our mathematicians develop!
