This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Special education can be challenging but extremely rewarding, especially if you teach in the South Bronx. My students come from a predominately low-income area and come from single-family households. 99% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds and 25% of those students are special needs. My students face a multitude of problems in our school, such as a lack of proper funding for books and other essential needs, growing up in a high crime high poverty neighborhood, and a general culture that doesn't put an emphasis on a strong education.
My students are highly energized and visual learners.
They love working on computers and using technology. In my classroom, I push my students to become job and college ready. Throughout the year we explore how to write resumes, balance checkbooks, plan a dinner party, use Microsoft Office, use Google Drive, and design a house/room/zoo. This way my students are ready for the real world at a young age.
My Project
Many of the students in my special education classroom benefit from tangible resources to help them learn. By having math manipulatives such as blocks and fraction tiles, they can visually see how fractions and numbers are made up in order to help them see things in a different way which is helpful to their learning.
My students need math manipulatives for hands on learning in order to help them be successful in Math and STEM activities.
By giving them resources to help them, my students will be able to succeed and move forward with their learning on a daily basis!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
