Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade to a very active and creative group of students who love anything hands on. I am in a large, urban district in Oklahoma. My school is a high poverty and high minority school. I teach at a Reading First school so it can be hard to get supplies for math.

My ultimate goal in my classroom is to run math centers. Unfortunately, I do not have enough math manipulatives to do this. My students are extremely active and kinesthetic. I am looking for any way that I can to teach them math in a fun hands on way so that they understand and grasp the concepts.

I need a variety of math manipulatives, including foam dice, practice sheets, counters, and number tiles for addition and subtraction, geometric shapes, pattern blocks, fraction circles, and other manipulatives to help create motivation for my students and give them the opportunity to learn math hands on rather than with just paper and pencil. There are several major standards that my students are expected to master in first grade. I need several different ways for them to process this information. Any time they can touch it and move it around, they are much more likely to understand and internalize what they are supposed to be learning.
