Hands-On Math Mathematicians

Help me give my students math manipulatives that will help them solve mathematics when it's difficult for them to do mental math.

My Students

I am working with second and third grade diverse learners. We returned to in person learning in August of 2021. Due to the return to the classroom, many of my students are further behind academically. The community from which they come from are under-resourced and having basic supplies is difficult. This is my first year of teaching. I am currently teaching in the Austin community in Chicago, IL. The population of my students is seventy percent African American and thirty percent Latinx.

My Project

The materials in this project will be used to give my students hands-on opportunities to learn and understand math. The materials will help me teach my students and for them for do their work independently. Some of my students are visual learners and need to visually see manipulatives to help them solve the problems. The items in this project will be used for in person learning in a separate setting math class.

One example of the students using the materials is helping my students understand the concept of place value.

Students will understand that 10 ones turn into 1 ten and then 10 tens turn into 1 hundred. Students can visually see the concept and learn how it works.
