My Students
I teach 18 of the most curious, enthusiastic, helpful and absolutely adorable pre-k students you will ever meet. The anticipation of their morning hugs gives me motivation every day.
Every day I'm intrigued by my students' growth and understanding of the world around them.
Like most children, my students love to create and express their knowledge through art and building. But what I find most impressive is the sense of community and constant encouragement my students give to each other. While at the art center, they gather enough materials for everyone at their table. When someone is having a difficult time, they offer encouraging words or help to find solutions to their problems. They take turns closing the back of each other's smocks before painting. All without my direction.
My Project
Math manipulatives such as counters, pattern boards and number cards, along with writing tools, are what I use to facilitate my pre-k students' basic math skills. These materials are used to improve number recognition, quantifying and comparing skills. Students are able to freely explore to make their own math discoveries and use them during specific lessons.
Though we are teaching remotely due to this unfortunate pandemic, I would like my students to be able to continue using these hands-on math tools at home.
However, many of my families lack the ability to purchase these items at this time. Having some materials that are similar to the ones we used in our classroom will give the students a sense of familiarity and help them feel more connected to our new teaching format.
Having access to these materials in their homes will also allow the parents to use and support their children's learning. By each student having hands-on math materials in their homes, they can successfully continue to learn and participate with their online class.
