My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brooklyn. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Russian, Uzbek and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
Our students are 30 fourth graders in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, New York.
Our students are English Language Learners. Some of them have various disabilities, such as Speech and Language, Learning Disabilities, and Autism. I try to meet their learning needs and give them the best educational experiences possible and a place to call home. It is an integrated co-teaching classroom, where students with disabilities are mainstreamed with general education students. We also have 2 bilingual students in our room.
Our classroom this year is decorated in bright colors like pink, neon green, purple and blue. We like to keep the classroom bright and vivid colors. I feel children with special needs learn best when you have a warm and welcoming classroom. We are asking for necessary supplies to get the students started.
My Project
These math tools will be a great addition to our classroom. With all the many different types of learners we have in our room: English Language Learners, Students with various disabilities and general education students. Learning new concepts in math especially abstract thinking, when students have the hands on experience to help build on their knowledge of mathematical skills. Teaching for 20 years I know that these topics are a real challenge for students and having these materials in the classroom will help all students gain a better understanding of these topics. My goal is to reach all students with many different approaches. I would like to give them all the tools they need to succeed in this area of math.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
