I am a teacher at Buffalo Public School # 84. School 84 is designed for students with multiple handicaps. The students at 84 range in age from 5 to 21. The students may have a physical disability, a learning problem, a mental disability or an emotional disability. We service children in academic classrooms, modified academic classrooms and functional classrooms. We offer physical, occupational and speech therapy on site. We also have a full time nurse on duty.
At PS 84, I teach students in a modified academic classroom. My students range in age from 8-10.
All of my students are multiply handicapped and learn best with hands-on materials. I have a very limited supply of math materials that allow my students to learn to their full potential. Funding for extra materials at my school does not really exist due to the fact that my students do not fit the traditional mold for funding projects. My goal is to enhance my students learning potential in math by using the hands on materials I have requested.
I am planning on developing math stations for individual work and a whole group area to teach specific lessons. In the math stations my students will be able to use a variety of items with some adult assistance. They will be able to choose to complete a daily assignment using the Grab & Go math which targets the areas of time, money , place value, measurement, money and problem solving. The will also be able to choose daily assignments from addition rings, subtraction rings, number line activities or calendar math. Each day they will have to complete their math journals and the Daily Days in School activity center. To teach whole group lessons I have chosen overhead addition, subtraction, place value, time and money kits. I have found the overhead keeps my students attention and allows them to do their best learning. The lessons will correspond with the individual station lessons. I have also asked to purchase individual one-minute practice sheets for testing my students skills. I will also use the whole group area as a place my students can show off their new math skills to other students and adults. I feel the students will be able to work to their full potential at a rate they need and then share with everyone how smart they have become. This will not only build my students math skills but also their self-esteem.
