My classroom is filled with 30 students with active bodies, expressive minds, and big personalities. We are a Title I school with all students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in Cleveland, Ohio.
Many of my students live in poverty and are transient.
Although they are only 7 and 8 years old, my students have faced and are facing situations that no children should have to go through. As their teacher, I am always looking after both their educational needs and their personal needs. This includes buying book bags, clothes, food, water, and more. I do this without hesitation because I know if they're given the tools to succeed, they will.
My Project
These manipulative bins will offer my students all the tools needed to continue being successful in math in a safe way. Students will be able to fully participate in an immersive math environment without having to worry about sharing limited, sanitized supplies.
Students should be able to support their math education with individual physical manipulatives, even with COVID-19.
Students in my class will be returning to in-person learning soon and currently we do not have enough materials without sharing. Students are not allowed to share materials because of the virus so they will need their own manipulative kits, with dry erase number line boards, Geoboards, highlighters, and more while at school. Students will be returning to a hybrid learning environment where there will be a lot of unexpected changes occurring. However, the one constant that I would like to remain for my students is their high-quality education and support from their teachers, families, and community.
