it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am starting the year teaching in New York City. I have a group of excited and dedicated fifth graders that want to get their hands on learning math. After being distanced by zoom they are returning to meet their friends and learn in community.
Help me build up my classroom with math materials and games to get deep into learning.
Getting hands on materials for math makes the learning real and helps connect abstract ideas. Everyone can learn better by making sense of base ten systems and algorithms with tactile materials. And games are an ideal compliment to keep minds working and enjoying learning.
My Project
Bringing these hands on materials to our classroom will enhance the math learning we do all year long. Developing a conceptual understanding that goes beyond procedures and memorization makes math captivating.
These resources will bring fun and excitement to concepts of base ten, fractions, number fluency and arithmetic.
The linking cubes will extend the concept of addition and subtraction to multiplication and division. The base ten blocks, flats, and cubes will be representations for whole numbers and decimals. The fraction towers help make fractions numbers and invite students to be familiar and less intimidated by the concept that surrounds them. The board games will keep them learning and having fun while taking a break from the concrete math work.
