Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are kindergarten through fifth graders who are full of energy. They visit the library once per week for a scheduled special. In addition, teachers send students to the library to complete a task or come for a full class activity. Some also come during recess for fun or to mentor younger students.

This year's library looks a little different as momentarily, library is coming to the classrooms.

Some students attend school in a hybrid model, attending school only 2 or 4 days per week and the other days virtually. In addition, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some students attend school virtually 5 days per week. The students have adapted to the challenges thrown at them this year and are not only surviving but thriving in this very different environment.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They love reading diverse books, participating in maker space activities and STEM challenges and are very curious. There are over 1,400 students in our school!

I have a large population of English language learners. They are eager to learn and enjoy every minute of it. My students are both general and special education students. They are all amazing kids!

My Project

"Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It's your place in the world; it's your life," Mae Jemison.

If my students have the exposure to learn about women in history like Mae Jemison, then they will be encouraged to persevere and follow their dreams.

Giving them that exposure will truly make a world of a difference. My IF/THEN statement would be my students first having the exposure, then they will be able to persevere. By having hands on materials, my students will be able to solve mysteries, identify cause and effects, make experiments. Without these hands on resources, my students struggle with the ability to problem solve in the classroom. Covid-19 has taken away so many great things from us, I'd love to bring back our very own maker space.

With this maker space, we will first learn about astronauts like Mae Jemison, and others that inspire us like Jane Goodall who both use their academics, knowledge and hands on ability to solve problems.

I will share the videos of Sam Wynn and Sydney Hamilton from the If/Then Collection as well Curiosity Camp Activity Sheet: Pom Pom Launcher as we begin making!

It is my hopes that in learning about Mae Jemison, Jane Goodall and others, my students will gain knowledge on the field of space and science. They will gain leadership skills such as perseverance, bravery, strength and more.

Bringing STEAM materials back into the classroom, will truly help them gain creativity, imagine new concepts. The project that inspired me most was "Actually, It Is Rocket Science!"
