This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten in Oakland and my students come from all over the world and speak many different languages. It is my hope that together we create a classroom community that is inclusive and fun. A place where we learn about ourselves and others as well as build skills to feel confident in learning.

Each year I get a new group of tiny humans with big personalities and even bigger dreams.

They talk about becoming engineers, teachers, and scientists. Our school is a vibrant and positive community that encourages students to be intelligent, kind, and strong. When we make a mistake we try again, and when things get hard we don't give up! We are scholars!

My Project

Last year, due to the COVID pandemic, teaching and learning was primarily online. Almost everything we did was through a screen. I missed interactive hands-on learning so much and I know the kids missed out as well! This year I want to start the year strong with all the hands-on learning activities!

I want to give my students opportunities to engage in academic play that will foster a love of learning.

They will learn numbers and improve their gross motor skills with the number stepping stones and balance waves. They will practice sorting, patterns, and counting with the dominoes and animal counters. They will learn letters and engage in social-emotional activities with the ABC puppets. They will practice negotiating, creating, and team-building with the train set.
