Hands-On Learning with Geometry

Help me give my students a hands-on experience in geometry with math manipulatives and materials.

My Project

My students come to school from different backgrounds and learning abilities. The students I teach are in an honors setting but often get bored with note-taking and doing worksheets. Students need challenges and projects, as well as kinesthetic learning, to make a deeper connection with the concepts. In order to meet their needs, I must provide activities that are engaging and interactive. I teach two sections of Honors Geometry to students with a variety of learning styles. Our school is a rural school with approximately 43 percent of the students at or below poverty. Some of my students have had limited opportunities to connect the instructed geometry concepts to real applications in today’s world or have trouble visualizing the concepts.

Using manipulatives in class will help with student engagement and retention of knowledge.

I plan to use the graphing whiteboards in my classes to informally assess students on problems in class and for think-pair-share. Many topics in geometry utilize graphing. The document projector will be useful to show small objects to students, as well as let students show their written work to peers and communicate mathematically. The cardstock will be used to make nets for the geometric 3D shapes, which will also be filled with rice to show the difference in volume between different shapes. The geometry pieces and geo reflectors will help students understand theorems for shapes in several units (transformations, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, angles). The rulers and patty paper are great as straight-edges for geometry constructions, as well as measuring length for projects related to dimensions. Each item will help students have a better math education.
