Hands-on Learning Through Outdoor Classrooms!

My Project

Last year, myself and 2 other teachers on my campus wrote and received a grant to create an outdoor learning experience for our first and second graders. Each year, first grade hatches chicken and duck eggs as part of our life cycle curriculum. We have now included an outdoor chicken coop and fenced area so that we have a more permanent place to house the chickens and ducks. With our most recent grant, we received funds to purchase an adult Sulcata tortoise from a rescue. We have an outdoor space for him amongst the other animals and we are so excited for the adventures we will have with him!

To provide tools for our students to be more hands on and carry some responsibility with our animals, we need gloves and gardening tools for them to use!

We will have students wear the gloves while doing various things in our outdoor classroom. Anything from giving hay and feed to the animals, to taking care of the plants and flowers we will have in planters in our outdoor area. We will have rakes and shovels for the students to help pick up "waste" from our animals, as well as moving anything that needs moving!

We are so excited for the experiences we are able to offer our students and all the new things they will learn along the way!
