Hands-On Learning: Multi-Sensory Magic for Young Deaf Learners!

My Project
I am the lucky teacher of my own self-contained Special Education Day class, made up of young Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, ages 4 to 6 years old. My students use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate and learn about the "hearing" world around them. Most of my students have additional challenges such as autism, blindness, and/or general language delays; as a result, it is ESSENTIAL that these students receive an education that is tailored to their unique learning styles and linguistic needs, and prioritizes their accessibility above all else. As their teacher, I have an major role in providing these young D/HH learners with the best possible start to their educational journey, and I do not take this responsibility lightly!
Multi-sensory toys and tools are essential for young deaf children with special needs, fostering inclusive learning environments that engage all senses and empower their unique ways of experiencing and understanding the world.
As with most children, especially those with special needs, structure is essential to provide them with a safe & quality learning environment. Furthermore, I have included various tools in my cart that all serve a very specific purposes in my classroom. "Clever Dots" are large multi-colored visual markers that indicate seating arrangements & designated learning areas. Sand timers are a must to support student independence, and help with turn taking when playing with peers (very important!). Rolling carts have separated drawers that help students stay organized with school work and preserving artwork they want to bring home! The art caddy's help keep materials (scissors, crayons, glue) organized and easily accessible. A large cork board and pocket chart will help support an area for our morning meeting. Lastly, multi-sensory toys, which are both for play and to promote emotional regulation... a must have in my classroom!
