Hands-On Learning- Manipulatives for Kindergarten!

My students need math and phonemic awareness manipulatives to use for hands on exploration. These include alphabet sounds teaching tubs, Magna-Tiles and counting tubes.

My Students

Welcome to Kindergarten! Kindergarten is an exciting time in the lives of many students. Students are beginning to learn how to read, write, and count. On top of these important foundational skills student are learning how to follow rules and routines, and make important friendships.

Our school serves a low income population of students with 100% receiving free breakfast and lunch.

Many students are living at the poverty level. For many students, our school is a stable environment where they feel safe and comfortable and ready to learn. Kindergarten is known as a pivotal year in a child's education. It is a place where children come to learn rules and routines and the basic social skills needed for a successful start to their education. Unfortunately many of our Kindergarten classrooms have become a paper and pencil institution. In my classroom we are looking to enrich our students' education and provide them with as many hands-on experiences as possible during the school day. My classroom has become a diverse learning environment where I have tried to balance a rigorous academic curriculum and a play-based approach to teaching.

My Project

As we try to return to play in the classroom, our Kindergarten classroom environment is set up in a center-based design. There are various centers around the room (art center, computers, literacy center, math center, sensory tables, etc.). For literacy, I am requesting Alphabet sounds tubs to help students with phonemic awareness and letter recognition. Students will be able to do endless hands-on activities with these tubs including sorting by beginning sound. For my math center, I am requesting Magna-Tiles. These tiles offer endless possibilities from manipulating the tiles to make shapes and build structures to exploring light or the properties of magnets at a sensory table. I am also requesting Linking Number Monkeys, See-Inside Counting Tubes, and Lakeshore Counting Kids 1-30 to help expand our math center and invite children to want to explore this area. Lastly I am requesting Classroom Carry-Alls to put in the centers. These are great for organizing various materials.

As we return to a play-based classroom, these materials will help students to learn important foundational skills while playing.

They will be using their hands and brains for important activities that move beyond the paper and pencil. Our students' education will be enriched to new levels and the learning that can be achieved will be immeasurable!
