My Students

Do you remember how excitedly you entered your classroom when you were a small child? The bright new crayons and bright, shiny books? The anticipation of learning something new and wonderful? I want to create that same kind of excitement for my students each day they enter our classroom.

We are a high need school in which the ESL population has increased by 500% in the past three years and the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

It is my job to make sure each child has the tools needed to succeed. Many of my students have a language barrier to learning. I work hard to give all my students the confidence to master fundamental skills and make learning a fun and engaging experience. Of course, adults know that games are more than just fun...they're an important component of education! They entertain and teach too! Games lower anxiety and of course, children learn better when they're relaxed. Did you know that playing games also helps build language skills? What a wonderful way to support English Language Learners!

My Project

These materials will enable us to create a vibrant classroom atmosphere in which children are happily engaged in learning activities which feel like play. Of course, their brains will be absorbing all of the skills of the activities: word building, phonemic awareness, an understanding of phonics. All of these skills will lead them easily into being competent and strong readers. I am requesting a variety of materials including magnetic word builders, a roll and write word game, and giant clear-view stamps.

Readers are leaders.

Acquiring these basic fundamental skills through workstations will give my students the power to become capable readers. The door to the world's possibilities will be open to them!
