Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like millions of other students and families across the world, the coronavirus pandemic has deeply impacted my students and their learning. Some of my students have daily access to technology for interactive learning websites; many of them do not. I communicate with my families daily, sending videos of me reading a book on the screen, as well as math, literacy, and social-emotional activities that families can do at home to support their child's learning.

During this time of learning together while apart, my student's energy, excitement, and passion for learning shines through the screen.

All families have their own personal and economic stressors that can make learning from home extra challenging. Many parents still send me photos or videos of learning activities their child has completed at home - pictures of journal entries, creating graphs with blocks, sorting their Legos by shape, adding with popcorn, and so much more. Each student has expressed how much they miss their friends and want to be in school. While it is far from the same, the online learning community that we have formed has been an undeniable tool of support in connecting with students and their families.

My Project

To say that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our schools would be a huge understatement. A few days ago, educators and families in Chicago heard of our district's plan to resume school in the fall. These materials will be a huge asset in creating individualized learning resources for my young preschoolers, and can easily transition to at-home learning materials for students should we move to remote learning. Knowing how important the relationship is between families and teachers in an early childhood setting, these materials would help me make connections with my families as they practice skill-building activities with their child.

These literacy, math, and fine motor supplies will provide my young learners with individualized hands-on learning materials both in the classroom and while learning at home.

These resources will allow my students to explore letters and letter-sounds, build their own words, build with cubes, sort by different features with bears, and strengthen their fine motor skills through a wide variety of included activities. The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time, and while all teachers are certainly facing an unprecedented reality, I would love to be able to encourage my student's learning both in the classroom and while learning at home!
