Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
After ten years of teaching English, this is my first year teaching middle school social studies! A lot of students consider history to be a "boring" subject, and often don't have an opportunity to do hands-on learning in this type of class -- but my students are sixth graders and they NEED to have tactile experiences to spur their learning!
I want do a project with students in which they create 3D topographical maps using kinetic sand.
Using a paper map I give them, will work with their group, using sand and other supplies like LEGO and pipe cleaners to recreate the map in a plastic tray.
Other supplies are for our dedicated social emotional learning time, done in our school "houses." We have four houses: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. I am the lead teacher for sixth grade House of Earth, and every Friday I have dedicated time with those students for culture building, connection, and growth activities. All of the students in my House are also my social studies students. The bottles and craft supplies will be used during this time with them to create their own sensory and calm down bottles to take home or leave in the classroom -- their choice.
