This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students range from 3-5 years old and they all have a hearing loss. We are a special education classroom for deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers and my students utilize hearing aids and implants. They all come from low-income, Hispanic or African-American families in Chicago.

Due to their hearing loss, all of my students have moderate to severe language delays and struggle to acquire language.

We have to work on everything from "What's your name?" to action words. We work really hard learning to talk and communicate!

My Project

The best way for preschool age children to learn new things in through hands-on activities! Anything that they can manipulate or create with their hands is beneficial. My students especially benefit from a lot of hands-on learning due to their hearing loss. We do a lot of small group instruction in my classroom and I want the children to be working on letter and math activities while they are working in their independent groups.

I plan on using these materials to support letter and math instruction in my classroom.

I want to expose my students to letters and numbers in a variety of visual and hands-on ways. We are going to use these materials to work on letter formation and identification as well as counting and shapes. Children this age love play dough, sand and painting. I'm going to use them to provide exposure to letters and math concepts. Also, the beads will be great for practicing names!
