Hands-On Learning In Math: Not Just For Little Kids Anymore!

Help me give my students more hands-on and cooperative learning activities! Students don't stop learning with their hands after elementary school!

My Students

My first year of teaching has been an adventure with ups and downs. The students I interact with on a daily basis are always ready for the next challenge. While I can't think of one student who would say that geometry is their favorite subject, there are many who tell me they are always excited about my class.

Every day, I am reminded of how capable and energetic my students really are.

I was constantly warned away from taking a job in teaching, especially teaching in an under-served, urban school. This fear was worsened when I started reading some statistics that came from my school district. My students have proven all of these accusations wrong. They are ready to take their learning to the next level, and I want to be able to offer them this.

My Project

I am planning on bringing some of the activities that students learn the most basic mathematics principles up to a high school level in my geometry classes. Geoboards are often used in elementary schools to help students visualize shapes or find area and then students never see them again. In my class, we will use them to explore different properties of polygons, like where the interior angle formula comes from and finding the area of complex or 3-D shapes.

Math means nothing to students who cannot see the effects of properties and equations in the real world.

With your help, I will be able to include cooperative activities alongside hands-on learning to more naturally differentiate instruction. This will open the door for kinesthetic learners, special education students, and students who are being held back by even a single tough-to-grasp concept.

Also, one of my biggest obstacles to being a more effective teacher right now is reaching English Language Learners who struggle with understanding academic language and tying together concepts. These materials will give them the opportunity to learn at the same level as their peers.
