Help me give my students hands on math and literacy activities to help them engage and learn about the world around them. Storytelling kits help deaf students learn in a hands on way!
I work with elementary students who are deaf/hard of hearing. These students are in grades k-2 and most have additional special education and sensory needs. I would like to provide my students with hands on learning through manipulatives and other educational supports to help solidify their learning while also making their time at school fun and engaging.
My students are very persistent children who have been faced with many challenges and continue to be excited about learning.
The majority of them have parents who are non-English speaking. This means many of my students are learning not only English, but also their home language AND American Sign Language. Some of my students are also profoundly deaf and have no formal language to communicate with their family and community outside of school, while others learn using the auditory/oral method which takes a lot of concentration and stamina throughout the day.
My Project
The materials requested would be used by my students to learn standards in a way that is engaging and in a way that fits their learning style. My deaf students tend to learn in a hands-on and visual way, so taking concepts and 'bringing them to life' by having activities that my students can interact and engage with is crucial.
Deaf kids can do anything, learning is no exception.
I try to differentiate materials and lessons to help them learn in a way that best suites them, and these materials would aid in that.
