Hands-on Learning! Building the Foundation and Closing Gaps!

My Students

My students are from a small rural school district. Our school contains over half free and reduced students. We also have many foster children in and out in our school district who would benefit from the materials of this project.

3rd grade students are very active and greatly benefit with having access to a variety of learning materials.

Third grade is a HUGE year in which students are reading to learn, and held to high standards with state testing as well.

With the pandemic and COVID-19 many students have suffered many learning gaps between all sorts of sickness and the 2020 shutdown. My student need help in the specific areas of fluency and comprehension. The pandemic affected these students in 1st grade, "the phonics year", so many students are still struggling to read, let alone comprehend what they are reading.

Along with learning loss and learning gaps from the pandemic, the 3rd grade classes this year have 20 students in each which are big for our district. The learning losses are very apparent, and my students would greatly benefit from interactive, hands-on materials, to enrich and remediate learning in all gaps.

My Project

The materials listed in this project are to provide hands-on learning and interactive learning to help close learning gaps. My students have many gaps from the last two years of the pandemic and any extra materials that students can physically manipulate and "play" to learn are extremely beneficial.

My students will be able to pull "games" to enrich the skills we are learning in class.

They will also be able to use stamps to learn spelling patterns, and phonics patterns we are learning in class weekly. I also included books of my students' interests this year. It has been extremely difficult to get students motivated to read on their own, but with their help, we have compiled a list of books that will reach their interests and needs for the enjoyment of reading.

One of the last things that my students need desperately is fluency instruction. With the activities I have added, my students will be able to have a variety of fluency instruction during small groups and these will be able to be utilized year after year.
