My Students
Hands-on history lessons offer my students the opportunity to work outside of the textbook using primary and secondary historical sources. Our product will be to create foldable "blocs" -- both the Eastern and Western sides of the Cold War.
I teach a diverse group of high school students at an urban high school in Northern California.
The art of teaching history involves developing the fine art of hooking students on the topic, interesting details, or projects that draw students away from the textbook and involve creating a do-able project. Unfortunately, project-based learning opportunities are few and far between due limited materials available to teachers.
My Project
I have no doubt that my students will have a better understanding of points of view during the Cold War after dissecting primary source documents related to increasing tensions between the Eastern and Western blocs. Student-created "blocs" will also provide a tool reviewing the history of the Cold War. This lesson will also be taught by my colleagues and includes materials request for all students. This lesson requires lots of white card stock and tape for students to use to construct their "blocs".
Most students in today's classrooms are visual and hands-on learners.
This project is an opportunity to provide a rigorous learning activity that includes reading, writing, and some artistic flare to capture central ideas concerning tensions of the Cold War. This hands-on foldable will allow students to better understand "point of view" from this critical period of world history.
