My students need a way to connect themselves to their world. Providing these 8 hands-on geography and history kits for my children increases their experience and understand things they are not able to see.
Understanding where a person is in relation to our world is a gigantic concept for second graders to understand.
I teach 20 amazing second graders in a high poverty, Title I, school district.
I have ability levels ranging from 5th grade to pre-kindergarten! We are located in rural Georgia. Many of my children haven't seen the beach much less the mountains in our state.
My Project
I am requesting hands-on geography and history kits for my children so that they can experience and understand things they are not able to see. I would like them to understand and relate to where they are 'on the map'. I can use Google Earth to show them where they are, but they need to learn all of the layers, the continent, the state, the city, and the town.
I believe that using primary sources and being able to 'touch' and be a part of history and geography enable and empower students to understand these difficult concepts.
