Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom encompasses a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds, each student having a different but pretty limited life experiences.

My students are curious beings, waiting to dive deeper into their interests and passions.

However, many of them are lacking the adequate resources to explore the world outside of their own local neighborhoods. About 75% of the students in my school are economically disadvantaged which means that many of them come from a household with very limited income, and therefore very limited resources and opportunities. Many of them do not have the experiences needed in order to draw upon and apply to their learning, but they do have the desire.

My Project

My students learn differently from one another and it is my job to find a way to get them all interested, excited, and willing and wanting to do the learning themselves. I have a diverse group of students with varying levels of experiences, some having more than others. They do have one common element that unites them all: our nation's history.

They love learning about how our country was created and how it has grown and evolved, but many are not interested in simply reading about it.

They want to dig into it, study the content in a meaningful way and to really learn the material.

My students need primary source documents because they will be more likely to participate and engage in the discussions when they are able to actually see and put their own hands on authentic looking papers and photographs than if they only had the traditional history book to study. The file folder games and comprehension cards will connect the facts they are learning to activities that the students will want to be engaged in and collaborate with other students on, as opposed to just reading an article or a textbook, which is our current primary source of information. The variety of social studies activities and materials in my project will allow more options to those that need a different means of learning in order to listen and focus on the lessons.
